The story
SituationCustomers love the new Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart, and the most common message to your branches is "Can I add a birthday candle?"
ChallengeRight now the counter staff add candles by hand and forget to charge for them, and online customers have no way to ask.
MissionSet up Birthday candle and Extra salted caramel sauce as paid add-ons, so customers can pick them when they order and the price is always right.
This guide shows you how to create an add-on: a single extra, choice or upgrade that customers can pick with a menu item. You create each add-on once, then group add-ons and attach the groups to as many items as you like.
Quick answer
Tap on the Menu option and select Create New Add-on. Fill in the add-on name, price and branches, and tap the Submit button to create a new add-on. Then open a menu item and add it to an add-on group so customers can choose it.
Before you start
You are signed in to Web Admin as a brand admin. Create New Add-on is only shown to brand admins.
You know the add-on's name and price. A free choice, such as a flavour in a set, has a price of RM 0.00.
Check Menu > All Add-ons first: the add-on may already exist from another item. One add-on can be used by many items.
Note
If your menu is managed by your POS system, menu editing is locked in Web Admin and Create New Add-on does not appear in the sidebar. Add-ons come from the POS instead. Ask your Eats Venture account manager if you are unsure.
Step 1: Open Create New Add-on
a) Tap on (a) the Menu option in the admin portal sidebar and, under Add-ons, select (b) Create New Add-on. You can also click New add-on at the top of the All Add-ons page.
Step 2: Fill in the add-on details
b) Fill in all add-on details and tap the Submit button to create a new add-on.
Note
Earlier versions of this guide said "Fill in all category details" at this step. The form is for the add-on, not a category: the fields are described below.
Add-on information
Add-on item name: what customers see next to the choice, for example Birthday candle. The hint reads "Example: soup of the day, salad and tea. Max length: 30 characters".
SKU (optional): your own code for the add-on, up to 30 characters, used for printer display or POS sync.
Price: the extra charge in RM, for example 1.00. The hint reads "For set item, add on option can be free. Certain items can be adjusted with small add-on fee." Enter 0.00 for a free choice.
Description (optional): more detail about the add-on.
eCommerce savvy tip
Small paid extras next to a favourite item are an easy yes for customers. Name them clearly, such as Extra salted caramel sauce rather than Sauce +, so nobody has to guess what they are paying for.
Availability and visibility
This section sets the add-on's availability and visibility by branch. In the screenshot, the branch DubuYo Mini Mayang Mall, Terengganu is switched on and set to Available (an earlier screenshot showed the branch Jalan Ampang the same way).
Each branch has a switch. Switch it off to hide the add-on at that branch. When it is on, choose Available, Sold out, or Sold out before and pick a date; the add-on then shows "Item will be available again at 12:00 AM" on that date.
Setting for all branches opens three options to set every branch at once: Visible & Available, Visible & Sold out or Hidden. Choose one and click Apply for all branches, then change single branches if needed.
Step 3: Submit
Tap Submit. You see New add on saved! and return to the All Add-ons list. Tap Cancel to leave without saving.
Step 4: Attach the add-on to an item
An add-on only appears to customers once it is in an add-on group on a menu item. A group is a set of choices with a rule, such as "choose up to 2 extras".
Open the item from Menu > All Items and scroll to Add-on Group.
Click Add new group. On Create New Add-on Group, enter the Add-on group name (for example Make it special), the Minimum selection and the Maximum selection.
Under Add-on group items, click Add item once for each add-on and pick it from the list, for example Birthday candle (RM 1.00).
Click Submit. You see Add on group updated! and return to the item.
Already set up the same group on another item? Under Copy from other menu, click Select a menu, choose the Category and Menu, and click Copy. For the full item form, see How do I edit a menu item?
Ops tip
A Minimum selection of 0 makes the group optional (customers see "Optional"), which suits extras like candles. A minimum and maximum of 1 makes it a required single choice, which suits sizes or flavours, so every order reaches the kitchen complete.
That is it. Customers can add a candle to their tart at checkout, and every one is charged.
If something goes wrong
"Price cannot be less than 0": the price is negative. Enter 0.00 or more.
"You are not able to create or update an add on": the account you are using is not a brand admin.
"Minimum selection cannot be empty." or "Maximum selection cannot be empty.": fill in both numbers on the add-on group form.
"Minimum selection is not allow to be larger than maximum": lower the minimum or raise the maximum.
"Maximum does not allow larger than the current item list": the maximum is higher than the number of add-ons in the group. Add more items or lower the maximum.
"Menu is read-only (synced from POS)": your menu is managed by your POS. Create the add-on there.
Customers cannot see the add-on: check that it is in an add-on group on the item, and that it is switched on and Available at that branch.
Mission accomplished: what you have achieved
- Extras customers can choose. Candles and extra sauce are on the order, not in a phone call.
- Charged every time. The add-on price is added automatically, so nothing slips through at the counter.
- Set up once, used everywhere. The same add-on can join groups on any item.
Next time customers keep asking for an extra, turn it into an add-on in one form.
