Change the order of items in a menu category

The story

SituationThe Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart is your launch of the week, and the Instagram post sends customers straight to your Chilled Cakes section.

ChallengeYou added three festive cakes this morning. New items join the top of their section, so the tart has slipped to fourth place, below items nobody has asked about yet.

MissionMove the tart to the first spot in Chilled Cakes before the post goes out, and put your other best sellers right behind it.

The Item Sequence feature in the admin portal allows you to visually re-order the display sequence of menu items using a simple drag-and-drop mechanism. This guide shows you how, one category at a time.

Quick answer

Go to Menu > Item Sequence, choose the Category at the top right, drag and drop the items into the order you want, then tap Save sequence.

Before you start

  • You are signed in to Web Admin as a brand admin. Item Sequence is not shown to store-level accounts.

  • The order applies to one category at a time and to every branch: there is no separate order per branch.

  • Only items that are switched on are listed. Items you have turned off do not appear here.

  • A newly created item is placed at the top of its category until you set an order here.

  • To change the order of the categories themselves, use Menu > Category Sequence instead.

Note

If your menu is managed by your POS system, menu editing is locked in Web Admin and Item Sequence does not appear in the sidebar. Ask your Eats Venture account manager if you are unsure.

Step 1: Open Item Sequence

a) Tap on (a) the Menu option in the admin portal sidebar and tap (b) Item Sequence, under Items.

The page opens on your first category. To work on another one, pick it from the Category drop-down at the top right of the page. The category name is shown above the items, with the guide "Drag and drop the item to re-order the menu sequence."

Step 2: Re-order the items

b) Drag and drop the item to re-order the menu sequence. Each tile shows the item's photo, name and price; the first tile is the first item customers see in that category.

To start from a quick ordering instead of dragging every tile, choose an option from Select a sorting option and click Sort:

  • Date added (Latest to earliest) or Date added (Earliest to latest)

  • Alphabetical (A-Z) or Alphabetical (Z-A)

  • Price (Low to High) or Price (High to Low)

Then drag individual items to fine-tune. Sorting only changes the order on screen until you save.

eCommerce savvy tip

Most customers order from the first few items they see in a section. Put your best sellers and this week's launch at the top, and items that need explaining further down.

Step 3: Save the sequence

c) Tap on Save sequence to proceed. The button is at the top right of the items and again below them; it becomes active once you have moved an item or applied a sort. You see Menu item's order updated, and the new order shows on your online store.

In the screenshot, the category Soondubu Jigae Set is open (an earlier screenshot showed Merdeka Bundle Promo with eight items), the sorting option Date added (Latest to earliest) is selected next to Sort, and five items are shown as tiles with their prices, with Save sequence at the top right and at the bottom.

Caution

If you switch category or leave the page before saving, you are asked "Are you sure you want to change category or leave this page? All unsaved progress will be lost." Click No, I'll stay and then Save sequence to keep your changes, or Yes, continue to discard them.

That is it. The tart now leads Chilled Cakes at every branch, right where the Instagram link lands.

Marketing tip

Plan the sequence with your promotions. When a campaign ends, move the next featured item up the same day, so the top of each section always matches what your social posts are talking about.

If something goes wrong

  • Save sequence is greyed out: nothing has changed yet. Move an item or apply a sort first.

  • Sort is greyed out: choose a sorting option first.

  • An item is missing from the tiles: it is switched off, or it belongs to another category. Check the item under Menu > All Items.

  • "Menu is read-only (synced from POS)": your menu is managed by your POS, and the order cannot be changed in Web Admin.

Mission accomplished: what you have achieved

  • Your launch, first in line. The item you are promoting is the first one customers see in its section.
  • Best sellers up front. Customers find the popular items without scrolling.
  • Same order at every branch. One save updates the sequence everywhere.

Next week's launch takes a minute: open the category, drag, save.
