The story
SituationThe Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart sold out at all four launch branches. This week, two more branches had chilled display fridges installed.
ChallengeYour Chilled Cakes section is still switched off at those two branches, and with the tarts in it, the name no longer says everything that is inside.
MissionRename the section to Chilled Cakes & Tarts and switch it on at the new branches, without touching a single item.
This guide shows you how to change an existing category in one form: its name, the branches that show it, and the days and hours it can be ordered.
Quick answer
Tap the Menu option and select All Categories. Choose one category from the list, then tap the Edit button. Edit the category information and click Update to proceed.
Before you start
A brand admin can change everything on the form. A store-level account can only switch the category on or off at the branches assigned to it; the name field is greyed out.
Changes apply to the category, so every item inside it is affected. To change one item, edit the item instead: see How do I edit a menu item?
Note
If your menu is managed by your POS system, menu editing is locked in Web Admin. The page opens as View Category, shows "This menu is synced from the POS", and has no Update button. Make the change on the POS instead. Ask your Eats Venture account manager if you are unsure.
Step 1: Open All Categories
a) Tap on (a) the Menu option in the admin portal sidebar and select (b) All Categories.
Note
Earlier versions of the sidebar called these groups Manage menu and Manage category. Today the same page is Menu > Categories > All Categories, next to Create New Category, Category Sequence and Category Availability.
Step 2: Choose the category
b) Choose one category from the list, then tap the Edit button on its row. You can also click the category name.
The list shows, for each category:
Name: the category name.
Store availability: the branches where the category is switched on, as short branch labels.
Menu availability: the category availability setting in use, or Default when it is available whenever the store takes orders.
Actions: Edit, and Copy link, which copies a direct link to that section of your online menu.
With a long menu, type in Search by category name, or filter the list by Menu availability to see every category that uses one setting.
Step 3: Edit the category information
c) Edit the category information and click Update to proceed.
The form has the same three sections as when the category was created:
Category information: Name, up to 40 characters. The hint on this page says "Max length: 30 characters", but the field accepts up to 40, the same as when you create a category.
Availability: brand admins see a Store enable checklist of every branch, with Select all and Deselect all. A store-level account that manages one branch sees Item enable with Yes and No instead (the screenshot above shows the brand admin view with Store enable). Choose No to hide the category at that branch.
Advanced settings: Category availability setting. Choose Default to make the category available whenever the store takes orders, or pick a saved setting to limit it to certain days and hours. Create new setting opens the setting form in a new tab. See Category Availability.
Note
A store-level account only changes the branches assigned to it. Branches it does not manage keep their current setting when it clicks Update.
Click Update. You see Category updated! and return to the list. Back to All Categories (shown as Back to menu category in older screenshots of this page) leaves without saving.
Ops tip
Fridge broken or a branch short-staffed for a week? Untick that branch here and the whole section disappears from its online menu in one step. Tick it again when you are ready.
That is it. Chilled Cakes & Tarts now shows at six branches, and every tart inside it came along without a single item edit.
Delete a category
Brand admins see a Delete button at the bottom left of the form. You are asked "Are you sure?" with the warning "You won't be able to revert this!". Click Yes, delete it to confirm.
Caution
A category can only be deleted when no menu item belongs to it. Move its items to another category first, from each item's edit page. If you only want to hide the category for a while, untick its branches instead; deleting cannot be undone.
If something goes wrong
"Unable to delete" with "Please make sure to disassociate this category from any existing menu before deleting": items still belong to this category. Move them to another category, then delete.
"You can not rename this post": the category does not belong to the brand you are signed in to. Sign in to the right brand.
"Menu is read-only (synced from POS)": your menu is managed by your POS. Make the change there.
The name field is greyed out: you are signed in with a store-level account. Ask a brand admin to rename the category.
The category does not show on the storefront: check that the branch is ticked, that the category has items available at that branch, and that its availability setting allows the day and time the customer chose.
Mission accomplished: what you have achieved
- One change, every item. The new name and branches apply to every item in the section at once.
- New branches selling straight away. The section shows at the newly equipped branches as soon as you click Update.
- A name that fits the menu. Customers see what is inside before they scroll.
Next time a branch gets new equipment or a section grows, it is one form and one Update.
